The Port Orford Arts Council is proud to sponsor the student art program at Driftwood Elementary School. With the help of grant funding from Oregon Community Foundation and Coquille Tribal Community Fund, the Art Plus program is in its third year and is growing.
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade receive in-school art classes, which meet Oregon State Arts Standards as well as provide a broad range of experiences with a variety of mediums, techniques and exposure to various art forms. Currently, students completed several in-depth ceramic projects including decorative tiles, which they sculpted and glazed with the help of Linda Tarr, local ceramic artist.
Last year, at Siren’s Cove, POAC held an art show to display student work; closing the month-long run with a reception Memorial Day weekend during a community-wide Art Walk. This year, adding Main Street Organization as one of our partners, we have plans to bring student art out into the community once again. It will be part of permanent and semi-permanent instillations around town.
The enthusiasm of the students is contagious and the support of teachers and the administration is greatly appreciated. As are volunteers from the community who are a big part of student success. Be on the lookout for some wonderful, student generated artwork popping up around town in the next couple months.
We are currently seeking funding to continue this worthy program next year. Tax-deductible donations can be made to POAC – Art Plus, PO Box 771, Port Orford, Oregon, 97465. Support for Art Plus is greatly appreciated. No donation is too small.
