Hello September!
It is still SUMMER and the Port Orford Second Saturday Art Walk & Town-wide Stroll on September 14th promises to be a wonderful experience. This month the theme of the Art Walk is “The Beauty of Wood”, and features two locally beloved galleries- The Wooden Nickel and Tree Wizard.
- In continuous operation through various owners since 1971, The Wooden Nickel, quintessentially Port Orford, offers a wonderful spacious gallery featuring a wide variety of gorgeous, high quality, handcrafted myrtlewood gifts, along with beautiful pieces made from Port Orford cedar, maple, and redwood.
- Gary “Wiz” Burns started carving wood in 1971 and never stopped. For 16 years, starting the early 1980s, Wiz had his Tree Wizard Gallery in June Lake, California. After a stint in Cave Junction, Wiz brought Tree Wizard Gallery to Port Orford, opening in August 2017. A master woodcarver working in a variety of woods, Wiz creates spectacular pieces ranging from his iconic hearts to exquisite abstract sculptures.
- Second Saturday also includes something very special and near and dear to our Arts Council’s heart – a FUNdraiser at Buffington Memorial Park for the renovation of the Community Building. From 11am to 2pm there will be everything from food to pickle ball lessons to a corn hole toss to a karate demo and a disc golf demo and MORE! Easy to stroll over to Buffington Park while you are out on the late-summer Art Walk! The cost of your ticket goes directly to the renovations of the Community Building, and that means a new and improved public space for art events, exhibitions, performances of all kinds, and much more. Go have some fun!
